JSAHMS History
Launched under the 9th Malaysian Plan, the Penang Second Bridge Project was developed to provide an alternative route linking Penang Island and the mainland while serving as a catalyst for socio-economic development within the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER).

On 1 March 2014, after a little over five years of construction, the bridge was officially opened by YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, and named Jambatan Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah.
It opened to the public at 1:00 a.m. on 2 March 2014. Measuring 24 km in total length with 16.9 km spanning the sea, the bridge connects Batu Kawan on the mainland to Batu Maung on Penang Island and is currently the second longest bridge in Southeast Asia. It not only provides an alternative commuting route but also acts as a catalyst for economic growth and development in Penang, especially in the Batu Kawan area.
